By Erin Haskell

DIAS CREEK- The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), along with the state Division of Fish and Wildlife shut down an alleged illegal oyster operation running out of Dias Creek late last week.

The raft was constructed for the purpose of harvesting. The oysters were then sold in the area. Zitter was described as having an oyster dealership in Rio Grande. No further information on the location of the dealership is available at this time.
The oysters were removed from Dias Creek by the DEP and taken to state operated beds in the area.
The maximum penalty for raising and harvesting oysters in state prohibited waters is 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, and a three year marine license suspension.
