Travon Smith.

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – Wildwood Police Department responded to Cape Regional Medical Center for the report of a sexual assault victim seeking treatment at that facility during the early morning hours of April 2.
During the ensuing investigation conducted jointly by the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, it was learned that the 15-year-old female victim was provided with alcohol and narcotics, then sexually assaulted by two adult males at a residence in Wildwood after she was rendered incapable of providing consent due to intoxication.
Officers responded to a residence in the 100 block East Rio Grande Avenue, where the incident was alleged to have occurred. Here police located the two adult males named by the victim. These males were detained and a court authorized search warrant was executed at the property to recover evidence of the crime.
As a result of the investigation, Travon Smith, 18, of Wildwood, was charged with aggravated sexual assault, first degree, and endangering the welfare of a child, third degree.
Mickiah Butler, 20, of Wildwood, was charged with aggravated sexual assault, first degree, sexual assault, second degree, endangering the welfare of a child, third degree, and possession of controlled dangerous substance (CDS) paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense.
Smith and Butler were lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
Prosecutor Robert Taylor advises that persons convicted of a first degree crime are subject to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, persons convicted of a second degree crime are subject to a term of imprisonment of five to 10 years, and persons convicted of a third degree crime are subject to a term of imprisonment of three to five years.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
