Two Indicted in Teen’s Murder

RIO GRANDE – Two individuals were indicted in the homicide of Nicole Angstadt, 15, in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township, Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor, Middle Township Police Chief Christopher Leusner and Lower Township Police Chief William Mastriana announced in a June 28 release.

On Dec. 14, 2015, detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lower Township Police Department, while conducting a missing person’s investigation, went to 100 Vermont Avenue and discovered the body of a white female, later identified as Nicole Angstadt. Angstadt was reported missing by her mother on Dec. 1, 2015. 

An investigation conducted by members of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Middle Township Police Department and Lower Township Police Department led to the arrest of Derrick Powers, 23, and Charles Mosley, 33, both of Rio Grande, on Feb. 18, 2016 for the murder of Nicole Angstadt.

Derrick Powers was indicted June 28 and charged with the following:

  • Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Felony Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Conspiracy to Commit Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Robbery, a crime of the first degree.
  • Conspiracy to Desecrate a Human Body, a crime of the second degree.
  • Burglary, a crime of the second degree.
  • Attempted Aggravated Sexual Assault, a crime of the second degree.
  • Hindering Apprehension of Another, a crime of the third degree.
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a crime of the third degree. 

Charles Mosley was indicted June 28 and charged with the following:

  • Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Felony Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Conspiracy to Commit Murder, a crime of the first degree.
  • Desecration of a Human Body, a crime of the second degree.
  • Conspiracy to Desecrate a Human Body, a crime of the second degree.
  • Burglary, a crime of the second degree.
  • Sexual Assault, a crime of the second degree.
  • Hindering Apprehension, a crime of the third degree.
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a crime of the third degree.

Prosecutor Taylor advises that persons convicted of the crime of murder are subject to a term of imprisonment of 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison. Persons convicted of a crime of the first degree are subject to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison. Persons convicted of a crime of the second degree are subject to a term of imprisonment of five to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison and individuals charged with a crime of the third degree, upon conviction are subject to a term of imprisonment of three to five years in New Jersey State Prison.

Prosecutor Taylor, Chief Leusner and Chief Mastriana would like to recognize the efforts of all agencies involved resulting in the indictment of these two individuals.
