Two Arrested after DWI Crash; Assault on Officer Alleged

WILDWOOD CREST – Wildwood Crest Police were called to the 5600 block Seaview Avenue June 29 at 4:36 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident involving numerous vehicles.
Upon arriving, Sgt. Rick D’Amico discovered a single vehicle struck five parked vehicles in this area. Further investigation led to Ashley Gentek, 28, of Bridgeton, being arrested for suspected driving while intoxicated and possessing an alleged substance believed to be marijuana in the vehicle. She also had custody of a 4-year-old child at the time of the incident. While the investigation was being conducted, Derek Bryant, 26, of Villas, and a relative of Gentek, became disorderly and was placed under arrest. While affecting the arrest, Detective James Mulholland was injured by Bryant when Bryant bit Detective Mulholland’s finger. Detective Mulholland was treated at Cape Regional Medical Center for his injury and released.
Gentek was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to breath test, careless driving, possessing controlled dangerous substance (CDS) less than 50 grams, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and child endangerment. Her bail was set at $10,000/10 percent. She was lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
Bryant was charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer for fighting with Detective Mulholland and two other officers, three counts of throwing bodily fluid at a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Bryant’s bail was set at $25,000/10 percent. He was lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
