NORTH CAPE MAY – Detectives from the Lower Township Police Department arrested two men and one woman on Adriatic Avenue in North Cape May Feb. 22, in connection with a burglary that occurred several days earlier.
The burglary happened in North Cape May where the men made entry into a home by forcing open the rear sliding glass door. They spent time inside gathering many of the family’s belongings and then stole the victim’s car to make their getaway. The homeowners were not at home during the burglary. At the time of this report, the vehicle has not been recovered.
During the investigation, detectives identified several persons involved in planning and committing the crime. The two male participants were taken into custody for the burglary, and additional narcotics related offenses were uncovered at the time of their arrest. They were then brought to police headquarters for questioning in other crimes, including narcotics trafficking and the possibility of their involvement with other burglaries and thefts occurring in Lower Township and other jurisdictions.
After their interviews and processing were completed, the two males were facing numerous charges:
Richard Schofield, 37, of North Cape May was charged with four third degree crimes including: burglary, theft and two counts of possession of controlled dangerous substance (CDS) – heroin. In addition, he was charged with a disorderly persons offense for possession of a hypodermic syringe and a petty disorderly persons offense for trespassing, during one of the thefts.
Donald Tozer, also known as Donald Hand, 40, of North Cape May was charged with five third degree crimes including: burglary, two counts of theft and one count each of conspiracy to commit burglary and theft. In addition, he was charged with two disorderly persons offenses; one for possession of a hypodermic needle and one for possession of drug paraphernalia and one petty disorderly persons offense for trespassing, during one of the thefts.
Annette Leiggi, 46, of North Cape May, was charged with one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense.
At the conclusion of processing, Schofield and Hand were transported to the Cape May County Correctional Center and are awaiting their hearings under New Jersey’s new bail reform system. Leiggi was released on a summons and given a court date to appear.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
