Three Charged in Connection With Armed Bank Robbery

COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Chief William Mastriana of the Lower Township Police Department announce the arrests of Joseph P. McCarraher, Jr., Trevor F. Seer and Meghan L. Valeri, all residents of Cape May County. 

On Feb. 25, 2016, the North Cape May branch of Crest Savings Bank on Bayshore Road was robbed at gunpoint by a male wearing a mask and hooded sweatshirt. The male demanded money and fled from the bank, running east into the wooded area across from the bank. A subsequent investigation was conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Lower Township Police Department.

On Sept. 23, members of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office arrested McCarraher, Jr. of Villas. McCarraher was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second-degree certain person not to have weapons, third-degree terroristic threats, and third-degree hindering apprehension.

McCarraher is currently being lodged at the South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton where he was previously being detained on unrelated charges.

Additionally, the following individuals were charged in relation to this investigation. On Sept. 22, Seer of Erma was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree hindering apprehension. On Sept. 21, Valeri of North Cape May was charged with third-degree hindering apprehension.

Prosecutor Taylor and Chief Mastriana would like to acknowledge all of the agencies who assisted with this investigation, including the Cape May County Sheriff’s Department, Lower Township Police Department, Wildwood Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Prosecutor Taylor advises that a person convicted of a first degree crime is subject to a term of imprisonment of 10 to 20 years in a New Jersey State Prison. Persons convicted of a second degree crime are subject to a term of imprisonment of 5 to 10 years in a New Jersey State Prison. Persons convicted of third degree crimes are subject to a term of imprisonment of 3 to 5 years in a New Jersey State Prison.
