Supreme Court To Hear DeMarzo’s ‘Cop or Mayor’ Case

By Herald Staff

WILDWOOD — The New Jersey Supreme Court will decide if Wildwood Mayor Gary DeMarzo should be able to also be a city police officer.
According to a story in the Press of Atlantic City, the state’s top court has agreed to take on DeMarzo’s appeal, but no date has been set.
DeMarzo joined the Wildwood Police Department in 1998.
He was elected to the city’s board of commissioners in May 2007 and named mayor in December 2009.
In 2007, a trial court said he could keep his policeman’s job on an unpaid leave of absence.
In February this year, an appeals court reversed that decision noting inherent conflicts of interest and forcing DeMarzo to choose between the mayor’s seat and his badge. DeMarzo then asked the Supreme Court to reconsider his case.
In May, DeMarzo chose his elected office and has since become the commissioner in charge of public safety.
