The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person(s) named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
ERMA – Lower Township Police were alerted March 13, at about 11:24 a.m., of a 911 call received from Cape May County Dispatch of a subject who was outside their headquarters, Lower Township Public Safety Building, requesting that a police officer go outside and shoot him.
According to a release, police officers from inside the building as well as officers on regular patrol and detective duties responded.
Upon arrival to the parking lot of the police station they encountered Brian E. Doherty, Jr., 33, of Villas. He was holding a large butterfly-style knife demanding that officers shoot him.
Doherty refused to drop the knife and attempts to prevent him from injuring himself or others were made by deploying a non-lethal conducted energy device, which met with negative results.
Officers continued to verbally de-escalate the situation making every effort for a successful resolution.
After several minutes, they were able to persuade Doherty to voluntarily turn over the weapon. Officers attempted to take Doherty into custody but he resisted and a subsequent struggle ensued where an officer was bitten several times by Doherty.
Officers were successful in finally apprehending Doherty, who sustained a small scrape to his forehead area.
The injured officer was evaluated, treated, and released.
Doherty was charged on a warrant with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Doherty was placed in custody as he awaited adjudication.
