By Press Release

This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
ERMA – Patrolman James Mathis of the Lower Township Police Department was monitoring vehicular traffic in the area of Railroad Avenue in Erma July 1 at approximately 12:40 p.m. During this time, he encountered a vehicle which was reported as stolen the previous day from Mount Holly.
Patrolman Mathis attempted to stop the vehicle, a 2010 Honda Civic, however, the driver refused to stop and rapidly accelerated away from Patrolman Mathis. Due to the time of day and the amount of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, Patrolman Mathis determined it was not safe to pursue the fleeing vehicle.
However, minutes later, Lower Township Police dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting a vehicle, matching the description of the vehicle Patrolman Mathis had attempted to stop, was behind a house on Shirley Avenue. It was also reported that two subjects had abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

During a search of the area, officers were able to locate both males, that fled from the vehicle, hiding in the area. Both subjects were taken into custody without incident. The subjects were identified as Jaron J. Corbett, 28, from Camden City and Daniel D. Watts, 26, also from Camden City.

Corbett was charged with resisting arrest, a disorderly person’s offense, and possession of synthetic CDS (controlled dangerous substance), fourth degree.  Corbett was also wanted on an outstanding no bail body warrant from Camden County.

Watts was charged with eluding a police officer, fourth degree, possession of stolen property, third degree and resisting arrest, a disorderly person’s offense. In addition to the criminal charges, Watts received multiple motor vehicle summons.

At the conclusion of the investigation, both men were lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.

Lower Township Police were assisted by Cape May County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and Middle Township Police Department.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
