ERMA — A resident, up at 2 a.m. on Feb. 18 in the 300 block of Magnolia Avenue, thought it strange that there were trash cans filled with scrap copper on his neighbor’s lawn. His sleeplessness led to the arrest of three men on theft and related charges.
He called Lower Township police, and when they arrived, they found some cans hidden in brush.
Officers kept watch on the containers, and about 2:50 a.m., three males in a pickup truck attempted to pick up the scrap metal.
When officers closed in, the trio immediately fled on foot, according to a release.
After a brief foot chase, Lower Township police arrested Harley O’Brien, 31, of Wilson Road, Villas and John Medrow, 53, whose last known address was the Economy Motel in Rio Grande.
A third subject, identified as Robert Medrow, 27, whose last known address was also the Economy Motel, Rio Grande fled toward that community.
At that time, local police requested assistance from Middle Township Police Department to locate Medrow.
A short time later, Middle Township patrol officers located Medrow hiding behind the Advanced Auto parts Store in Rio Grande.
All three subjects were taken to Lower Township Police Department for processing along with their pickup truck, which was impounded by Lower Township police.
Lower Township police determined that the scrap metal was allegedly stolen from Nuttal Plumbing in the 300 block of Route 9, Erma.
All three suspects were charged with theft and receiving stolen property and were remanded to county jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail each.
