COURT HOUSE – Sgt. Jay H. Gaskill III, 37, of Middle Township, was indicted on March 28 on sexual assault charges. Gaskill’s indictment did not appear in the weekly summary of indictments in the Herald because it was transferred to Atlantic County due to Gaskill’s position in the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office.
Gaskill was arrested Dec. 12, 2016, and charged with sexual assault and sexual contact for an incident that allegedly occurred in 2015.
Gaskill was transferred to and released from the Cape May County Correctional Center after posting $50,000 bail.
The grand jury indictment contained two counts: one for second-degree sexual assault and one for fourth-degree sexual contact. The second-degree charge can carry a prison term of five to 10 years if Gaskill is convicted.
Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Paul Skill said that the change in venue would not alter the fact that the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office will handle the investigation and prosecution of the case.
The investigation has been under the direction of the office’s Special Victims Unit.
Gaskill, a long-term member of the Sheriff’s Office, was promoted to his present rank in 2013.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
