COURT HOUSE — Almost $300,000 worth of stolen goods confiscated from a Dennis Township sex offender’s home in 2008 will be auctioned online starting this Saturday, May 22.
The items were taken from the property of Thomas Moran, 50, of Dennis Township. Moran is currently serving out a six-year term in state prison for receiving stolen property, sexual assault of a victim under 13 and criminal sexual contact. The stolen goods were found when he was being investigated on charges of sexual contact of a juvenile female that occurred in the Acme market in Mays Landing.
What was uncovered through months of investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime and Major Crime Units was a bizarre story of retail theft carried out by Thomas Moran throughout the region over the past ten years. Moran used a variety of techniques to successfully obtain expensive merchandise that ranged from expensive vacuum cleaners and computers to portable hand tools and cameras. The methods varied from simple shoplifting to more sophisticated schemes including the use of rebates and return of stolen merchandise for cash or store credit. In addition, extensive evidence was seized that indicated Moran created numerous false identities to further his theft schemes, but it did not appear to lead to any loss to individuals.
The total inventory of seized and subsequently forfeited property totaled $268,193.91 including the following items:
