COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland advised the public of a recent fraudulent check scam impacting the Cape May County area.
According to a release, during the month of July, detectives from Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as members of multiple municipal police departments throughout the county, have received complaints of fraudulent checks attempting to be cashed from legitimate business accounts.
Multiple vendors have received fraudulent checks from unknown individuals in an attempt to purchase items they are selling. These checks are written for a sum larger than the amount requested for the item and tend to be written from a large business or municipal accounts.
Sutherland warned the public to practice extreme caution when conducting all business transactions. He also suggested businesses in the area routinely check their operating accounts for any transactions which appear to be fraudulent. Furthermore, he warned vendors to practice caution when receiving checks from sources who would not normally purchase an item they are selling.
Sutherland urged anyone who has information concerning the investigation to contact Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135, or report it anonymously through the Cape May County Sheriff’s Tip Line at cmcsheriff.net, or through the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-465-2800.
