OCEAN CITY – Ocean City police have received multiple complaints of counterfeit money being used at local businesses during the past week. Police said the crimes occurred mostly in the business district of Asbury Avenue between Sun., Jan. 23 and Fri., Jan. 28.
The money is being discovered by the bank industry after the merchants have made a deposit and the bank and/or equipment identify the cash as counterfeit. The denomination of the counterfeit bill is $20.
According to the victims, a male suspect makes small talk with the cashier then buys something very small and inexpensive. He then receives anywhere from $16 to $18 back in real currency from the cashier. The suspect is described as a white male, about 5-foot-10, thin or “skinny,” according to witnesses, in his late 20s with dark hair, glasses and wearing brown-colored clothing.
Merchants are reminded to take extra precautions when processing cash payments for small items requiring a large amount of change to be given back to shopper.
