Police Say Young Woman’s Abrupt Death a Mystery

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

RIO GRANDE– The Cape May County Prosecutor’s office and detectives with the Middle Township Police Major Crimes Unit were called in to investigate the death of a 25 year-old female Saturday night.
An ambulance was requested on Mimosoa Drive at 7:52 p.m., for a woman who was passing out, according to police.
Middle Township patrol officers and the Rio Grande Rescue Squad responded to the scene with AtlantiCare paramedics.
Police said the woman identified as Rina Mercado, 25, was alive when EMT’s arrived on scene. At some point the woman started having problems breathing and eventually went into cardiac arrest.
Mercado was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where the Emergency Room staff continued efforts to revive her, police said.
At 9:03 p.m., she was pronounced dead.
Mercado is from Middle Township but had been staying at the Cast Away motel in Wildwood, police said.
There was no evidence of foul play at the scene but the age of the victim dying abruptly “was suspicious in itself”, police said.
An autopsy will be performed by the Southern State Regional Medical Examiners Office to determine the cause of death, police said.
