By Herald Staff

WILDWOOD — Wildwood Police Department and Cape May County CrimeStoppers are asking the public’s assistance locating a suspect wanted in connection with a May 6 robbery of a Mexican grocery store and assault of a 24-year-old female cashier.
Police Chief Steven Long told the Herald police are seeking Eric Gaines, 46, of Wildwood in connection with the robbery of Mexicana Deli, 205 E. Rio Grande Ave. at 10:46 p.m. Fri., May 6.
The victim was working behind the counter when “A person entered the store, walked behind the counter, assaulted her with his fist, knocked her down, then emptied the cash register,” Long said.
When the victim attempted to stop him, he again beat her, then walked out the front door with several hundred dollars.
From the store’s surveillance camera, police tentatively identified the assailant as Gaines. He remains at large, said Long.
Gaines has been charged with first-degree robbery and making heuristic threats.
Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact Wildwood Police Department (609) 522-0222 or Cape May County CrimeStoppers (609) 465-2800. Information may remain anonymous, and a reward may be given if the information leads to his arrest and indictment.
A search of New Jersey Department of Corrections inmate databank revealed that Gaines was incarcerated from Dec. 16, 2010 until May 1, 2011 for hindering apprehension.
He was described as a black male with shaved head, brown eyes, 5’-8” height weighing 198 pounds.
He also uses the alias of Rahim Cook.
