NORTH WILDWOOD – North Wildwood Police responded to a call for a large fight in the street in the 300 block E. 26th Avenue May 8 at approximately 10:50 p.m. Upon arrival, officers learned that a robbery had been committed and the victim was still on scene. The victim gave police a description of the accused and stated that he was assaulted and jewelry was taken from his person. A description of the accused was broadcast with the accused being last seen running south into the City of Wildwood before police arrived. Officers from the Wildwood Police Department arrived on scene and assisted North Wildwood Police in the investigation.
Officers searched the area and Officer Patrick Flynn found a suspect matching the description on Juniper Avenue in Wildwood a short time later. Police say further investigation revealed that the accused, Mathew Alston, committed the robbery and the assault on the victim in North Wildwood and he was arrested by Officer Ryan Madden. Alston was in possession of the stolen jewelry belonging to the victim at the time of his arrest.
Alston, 24, residing in Clementon, N.J., was arrested and charged with robbery, theft, simple assault and criminal mischief. Alston was also wanted by Gloucester Township, Clementon, Stratford and Glassboro municipal courts on multiple warrants. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center on bail set by Judge Louis J. Belasco, Jr., PJMC, in the amount of $5,000/full cash on the charges from North Wildwood.
