WILDWOOD – Members of the Wildwood Police Department, North Wildwood Police Department and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives, concluded a three week investigation concerning the theft of a substantial amount of copper insulated wiring from various locations underneath the Wildwood and North Wildwood Boardwalk Feb. 9.
During the ensuing investigation, information was developed identifying Jonathan R. Basara, 31, residing in the 400 Block of West Pine Avenue located in the City of Wildwood, as the individual responsible for the theft of the copper wiring and the extensive damage to infrastructure and conduit, which provides various services to the boardwalk businesses.
As a result of the investigation a court authorized search warrant was executed at Basaras’ residence, resulting in the recovery of physical evidence connecting Basara to the illicit activity. Accordingly, Basara was charged with the following criminal offenses; theft, a crime of the third degree and criminal mischief, a crime of the third degree.
Judge Dorothy Garrabrant of the Wildwood Municipal Court, set bail at $35,000 full cash, no ten percent. Basara was unable to post bail and was incarcerated at the Cape May County Correctional Center. Furthermore, additional criminal charges are pending in connection to this investigation, which currently maintains an active status.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
