CAPE MAY — Cape May Police Department reports the arrest of a man on Tue., Oct. 11 after receiving a report of a man firing a handgun in the 900 block of Washington Street.
Police received the first call at 3:44 p.m. from an off-duty police officer that observed a male subject discharging a handgun in the parking lot area of an apartment building located at 923 Washington Street.
Witnesses reported seeing a male, later identified as Evan Cederberg, age 54, of Cape May, discharging a handgun in the parking lot of the apartment building. Callers reported hearing the shots blocks away from the incident. Witnesses on location indicated that the suspect had returned to the building and directed responding police officers to a third floor apartment in the apartment building.
Cederberg was arrested at his apartment and charged with Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose (2C:39-4), a 2nd Degree offense, and with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, 2C:39-5, a 3rd Degree offense.
Cederberg was unable to post the $50,000 bail and is being held in the Cape May County Correctional Center. Police conducted a search of the apartment and recovered items related to the offense.
Investigating officers are Ptlm. Joseph Walker and Detective Douglas Henderson.
