RIO GRANDE– On Sunday at 2:35 a.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle overturning and landing in a drainage ditch near the Sonic restaurant on Route 9.
Police said a witness observed a vehicle orange in color in the area of the Wawa. The witness said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed as it traveled north through the parking lot, ignoring stop signs, it continued to pick up speed. As it approached the ditch the witness said the vehicle went through the safety fence, nose down.
A passenger, Steven Adams 25 from Whitesboro, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the pavement. He was flown by South Star to Atlantic City Medical Center. He suffered serious injuries.
The driver, Ryan Simcox 21 from Rio Grande, was not injured. He was arrested at the scene for Driving while intoxicated and transported to the station and was further charged with assault by auto.
Simcox was lodged in the Cape May County jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
A second passenger Elijah Adams, 21, of Whitesboro was not injured . Adams fled the scene prior to Officers arriving. He was arrested a short time later for a bench warrant. He posted bail at the station and was released.
