CAPE MAY – Carol A. MacNeal, 45, of Lansdowne, Pa., was arrested by the Cape May Police Department Aug. 8 at approximately 12:42 p.m. on numerous criminal charges following complaints of criminal activity.
At 12:15 p.m., Officer Kelley Walters was dispatched to the 300 block of Beach Drive for a shoplifting complaint. The officer’s investigation revealed that a store representative was assaulted by a female shoplifter as the shoplifter fled the store after being confronted by the representative. The unidentified shoplifter was last seen running onto Jackson Street from Beach Drive.
Shortly thereafter Sgt. Thomas Connelly was notified of a burglary and theft that had just occurred at a business location on Jackson Street in which an unidentified female entered the basement and removed some items from that location.
Special Law Enforcement Officer I Kathryn Bennett, while looking for the shoplifting subject in the Washington Street Mall area, was notified by a passerby that he had observed a female checking the handles of parked cars along Congress Place, attempting to enter the vehicles.
Officer Bennett then located the subject in a Congress Place parking lot in a parked GMC Suburban. When confronted by the officer, the subject fled on foot onto Congress Street to North Street and then to a backyard before being apprehended by Officer Walters.
MacNeal is charged with robbery, second degree, shoplifting, fourth degree (approximately $400 merchandise), two counts of burglary, third degree offense, theft by unlawful taking, disorderly persons offense, and resisting arrest, fourth degree.
Bail was set by Cape May Municipal Court Judge Belasco at $25,000. MacNeal’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 9 a.m.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
