COURT HOUSE – John J. Lawless of Philadelphia pleaded guilty Mon. Sept 12, to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in the death of Lower Township resident Frederick H. Shelton, the Press of Atlantic City reports.
According to the report Lawless admitted drinking 12 beers prior to the crash, but said he had no recollection of the actual collision.
Shelton, 50, was traveling north on Route 9 near Bennett’s Crossing in Lower Township when Lawless, who was heading south, crossed the center line and crashed into Shelton’s vehicle.
Shelton was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife and daughter, Brittany, both passengers in the car, were injured. They were both treated and released from area hospitals.
