STONE HARBOR — It was an early morning “grate escape” that did not go according to plan.
According to Stone Harbor Police, Patrolman Peters was on patrol March 3 at about 3:32 a.m. when he spotted a vehicle heading west on 96th Street with its trunk partially open and a sewer grate hanging out.
Curious, the officer stopped the vehicle in the 300 block 96th Street to further investigate.
Subsequently, he arrested William J. Colbourne, 39, of Court House and Karen L. Smith, 45, of Court House for allegedly stealing a sewer grate from the area of 80th Street and Third Avenue.
Both were released on a summons that charged with fourth degree theft.
The matter will be turned over to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
