Ocean City Power Outage Caused by Tossed Objects

By Herald Staff

OCEAN CITY — On Tuesday, July 7, at approximately 4 p.m. the Ocean City Police received a report of a large scale power outage which caused a loss of power to most of the stores on the boardwalk, several residences, and most traffic signals in the downtown area.
According to a release, after an investigation by the Atlantic City Electric Company, it was determined that the power outage was caused by an unknown individual(s) throwing an unknown object(s) onto the high power lines which caused a power surge and ultimately the overall short circuit of the system.
Power was completely restored by approximately 4:30 pm.
In connection with this incident, the city has received several reports over the past few weeks regarding persons throwing objects onto the electric power lines within the city. These objects have consisted of many different items including pairs of sneakers.
Citizens should be aware of the extreme danger involved with any type of object coming into contact with high power lines, and must avoid making contact with these power lines at all costs.
If anyone observes anything hanging from the electric power lines or witnesses anyone throwing any objects onto the electric power lines, they are asked to call the Ocean City Police Department immediately, so that the problem can be dealt with as quickly as possible. They can be reached at (609) 399-9111.
