Ocean City Police Make Arrest for Skateboard Park Theft

By Press Release

OCEAN CITY – The City had recently authorized the removal of the Skateboard Park in the 800 block of 6th Street. The work was in progress by members of Public Works. On Oct. 26, 2011, the Police Department was alerted to “Facebook” activity involving the Skateboard Park. The postings revealed many subjects admitting to illegal activity at the park that included drug ingestion along with recent thefts and damage. One of the posts indicated “I didn’t walk out of that place empty handed last night.”
As a result of these postings on “Facebook”, the Police Department established surveillance of the Skateboard Park during the overnight hours. At approximately 8:00 p.m., officers observed two persons exit a parked vehicle and attempt to gain entry into the secured park. The subjects left the area when no entry was gained to the park. At approximately 12:45am, on Oct. 27, 2011, the same two subjects returned to the skateboard park along with a third person now riding BMX style bicycles. At this time, one subject gained entry into the park via a hole in the fence. The subject then attempted to remove a 20 foot section of “rail” and hand it to the other two subjects outside of the fenced in area of the park. Officers on the surveillance detail approached the subjects and placed them under arrest. All three adults were taken into custody without incident and released on summonses.
The Ocean City Police Department is continuing the investigation into the thefts that occurred prior to the most recent incident.
Anyone with information about those thefts should contact the Ocean City Police Department at (609)399-9111.
The investigation was conducted by Sgt. Pat Randles, Ptl. Doug Swillo and Pti. Matt Schaffer.
