OCEAN CITY — On July 17, at 2:34 p.m, Patrolman Gramiccioni, while patrolling the boardwalk, heard a boardwalk merchant yell out for assistance. The officer observed the merchant pointing and yelling at a man running down 11th Street toward Ocean Avenue.
The merchant said the fleeing man had shoplifted a dress from his store. The officer instructed the man to “Stop! Police!” but he continued to run away. The man then entered a van parked at 11th St. and Ocean Avenue as the officer approached.
As the officer attempted to stop the suspect from leaving the area he struck the officer with the vehicle and sped away. The officer was on a bicycle at the time of the incident. The officer was able to continue to pursue the suspect and obtain vehicle information.
The officer observed the suspect in the van disregard several stop signs and traffic signals and almost strike numerous pedestrians walking in the area. The suspect was able to flee the area without being taken into custody. The officer was not injured during the incident.
Follow up investigation revealed that the suspect had taken a dress from the merchant who was yelling for help on the boardwalk. Based on the vehicle information obtained by the officer the suspect was identified as, Timothy Dowling, 39, of Haverford, Pa.
An arrest warrant was issued by Judge Richard Russell, in the amount of $50,000 full cash bail. Dowling was arrested by the Havertown police and is currently awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
