PRESS RELEASE FROM OCEAN CITY POLICE:
OCEAN CITY — On June 12, Captain Jay Prettyman, a fifteen year veteran of the Ocean City Police Department, graduated from the 237th Session of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, along with two hundred and fifty law enforcement officers. The 237th Session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from all states. Included in the class are members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 23 international countries, four military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the F.B.I. On average, these officers have 19 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. Besides the academic workload, the academy has stringent physical fitness requirements during the 10 week training. In addition to meeting these requirements, Captain Prettyman, and only a handful of other graduates were able to complete a 34 mile swim challenge during his time at the academy. In addition, Captain Prettyman’s roommate during the 10 week training program was from Afghanistan.
F.B.I. Director Robert Muller was the principal speaker at the graduation ceremony.
Training for the program is provided by F.B.I. Academy instructional staff, Special Agents, and other staff members holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise. Since, 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia due to the accreditation by the university of the many courses offered.
A total of 42,709 graduates now represent the F.B.I. National Academy since it began in July 1935. Of this number, approximately 25,197 are still active in law enforcement work. In addition to Captain Prettyman, the Ocean City Police Department currently employs two previous graduates from the F.B.I. National Academy, Chief Chad Callahan (225th) and Lieutenant Bruce Twiggs (230th).
Chief Callahan stated, “This academic training and networking environment that the F.B.I. National Academy provides will not only enhance Captain Prettyman’s management and leadership skills, but also provides our administration with a tremendous amount of resources and connections throughout the country.“
