Ocean City Police Alert Residents to Possible Door to Door Scam

By Press Release

OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Police Department has taken reports of door to door sales of various products throughout the city.
These individuals usually approach the home unannounced, and attempts to sell a product to the resident or homeowner via a high pressure sales technique. Many times the resident will commit a large sum of money as a down payment for products to be delivered at a later date. This involves the resident to committing to a contract and long term to future financial obligations.
Specifically, Ocean City residents have reported being approached at their homes by a frozen food salesman. The salesman usually targets elderly persons who are home alone and can be easily intimidated by the high pressure sales technique. The vehicle being used is a white colored pickup truck or sport utility vehicle with no identifying marks. The company being represented is identified as “Anchor’s Away.”
To date the Ocean City Police Department has been unable to locate a legitimate food company in the Ocean City area operating under the name of “Anchor’s Away.” Some food products have been delivered but not to the satisfaction of the resident based on the initial sales representation. A Google search of the name “Anchor’s Away Seafood- Meat Company” shows less than favorable reviews. The investigation also cannot identify where these products are being manufactured and if they meet federal and state safety guidelines for food production and processing.
If someone approaches your home make sure that they produce as valid photo identification for the company they represent before you open the door. If you have any doubts or suspicions then contact the Police Department immediately.
By City Ordinance only those companies authorized by the City Clerk’s Office to solicit door to door, and that have a mercantile license, may conduct business within the Ocean City limits. Usually door to door solicitations are limited to charitable organizations. If you have been a victim of this type incident lease call the Ocean City Police Department by dialing(609)399-9111 to file a report of solicitation.
