OCEAN CITY — The second bank robbery in as many days took place Tuesday, July 28 at about 9:15 a.m. at the Sturdy Savings Bank on 34th Street.
Information received was that the suspect was a white male, approximately 180 lbs. There were no weapons displayed and an unknown amount of cash was stolen. At this time the suspect was seen leaving the area on a bicycle, according to police.
The bicycle that was believed to be used by the suspect was later recovered a short distance from the bank. The suspect in this robbery is believed to be involved with six other robberies in the New Jersey and Delaware areas.
The investigation is being conducted by the FBI, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police and the Ocean City Police Department.
Shortly after 9:15 a.m., the Cape May County Search Plan was put into effect for all area police departments.
At 10:05 a.m, officers from Ocean City Police Department, Somers Point, Egg Harbor Township, Woodbine and Bass River station State Police and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office were searching.
A tracking dog followed the alleged robber’s scent to 29th and Simpson Avenue where a bird sanctuary is located. That wooded tract is surrounded by police, and a State Police helicopter has been requested to the scene to assist in the search.
At 11:35 the county search plan was terminated.
“Our number one concern is the safety of our employees, customers and the safety of those law enforcement officials who responded. I was impressed with the professionalism of the law enforcement agencies, which responded. It was really impressive how they responded, and communicated. They were very courteous, polite and attentive to employees,” said Sturdy Savings Bank President and CEO Jerry Reeves.
On Monday, July 27, a subject robbed the PNC Bank on Roosevelt Boulevard. He was still being sought by police.
Anyone with information about the bank robberies should contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at (609)677-6400 or the Ocean City Police Detective Bureau at (609)399-9111
