NORTH CAPE MAY – A 19-year-old North Cape May man was arrested May 31 for the alleged sexual assault on a mentally challenged woman,
Lower Township Police reported on May 31 at about 5:15 a.m. they responded to the area of Channel Apartments for a possible attempted abduction.
When officers arrived, it was learned that an unknown individual who fled from the area had allegedly grabbed a mentally challenged woman, who resides there.
Patrol personnel located the subject in North Cape May near the shopping center.
Both the victim and supervisory workers at the Cape May County ARC identified the individual.
Armed with that information, detectives and patrol personnel discovered that he had observed her in the area, and later entered into a conversation with her prior to inappropriately touching her.
Once the victim had been touched, she became alarmed and immediately told one of the apartment supervisors. The actor, who also had contact with the supervisor when he approached them, stated that he was being accused of harassing the victim prior to fleeing the area.
The suspect, Donald T. Arndt, 19, is of the first block of Glade Road, North Cape May, over a mile away from the location of the alleged incident.
Police stated they believe he walked to that location in the early morning hours prior to the attack.
The suspect was taken to Lower Township Police Department and charged with aggravated criminal sexual contact.
Judge David DeWeese issued the warrant and a Superior Court judge set bail at $300,000.
Arndt was remanded to county jail in lieu of bail.
Detective Chris Lambert, Patrolman Kevin Lewis, Patrolman Ryan Hansberry and Sgt. Thomas Beeby are investigating the case.
