CAPE MAY – A Cape May man who attends the United States Naval Academy received probation following an incident in which he was accused of threatening a cab driver with a butter knife, according to a report on NJ.com.
Prosecutors dropped assault charges against Midshipman Second Class Gabriel Voumard, 22, of Cape May, a junior who plays lacrosse for the Midshipmen.
Voumard pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment May 15.
The cab picked up Voumard and another man from an Annapolis bar early April 20. When they arrived at a home, the men said they needed to get cash from a nearby residence.
The cab driver told police that Voumard returned with a knife and ran aggressively toward him. A butter knife was found on top of the cab, according to police.
Vounard denied attacking the cab driver, Navy head coach Rick Sowell told CapitalGazette.com.
Vounard is still a member of the team and will return to the Academy for his senior year. He was suspended from the team after his arrest in April.
Voumard, a junior midfielder, is a 2010 graduate of St. Augustine Prep in the Richland section of Buena Vista.
He then attended the Naval Academy Prep for a year before enrolling at the Annapolis school for the 2011-12 academic year.
