LOWER TOWNSHIP – On March 10, 2016, the Lower Township Police Department’s Detective Division was conducting surveillance operations for suspicious and CDS related activity in the Villas section of Lower Township. While conducting the operation, the Detective Division observed a vehicle parked at a convenience store which was later learned to be operated by Steven J. Pettit of Shunpike Road, Cape May Court House. A second vehicle was parked next to Pettit and the two drivers had a brief interaction. Shortly after, both parted ways.
Pettit’s vehicle was followed and ultimately stopped for a motor vehicle violation. Pettit gave officers on scene permission to search his vehicle and while doing so, they discovered six (6) bags of suspected heroin along with seven (7) hypodermic needles.
Pettit was placed under arrest and charged on summonses for Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, a 3rd degree crime and Possession of Hypodermic Needles, a disorderly persons offense. At the conclusion of processing, Pettit was released.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
