On May 13 at 2:39 a.m., Lower Township Patrol Officers stopped a motor vehicle that had numerous lengths of copper pipe protruding from the vehicle.
The driver identified as Edward A. Williams, 32 years of age of the 100 block of Tomlin Avenue in the Villas section of Lower Township. He also had an outstanding warrant for contempt of court out of Middle Township.
Williams was placed under arrest for the warrant and lodged in the Cape May County Correctional center.
During follow-up investigations, Lower Township Detectives located multiple incidents of copper piping being stolen from local plumbers in Lower Township and West Cape May.
Detectives and patrol personnel were able to confirm that the copper in Williams’s possession had been taken from five local plumbers with a value in excess of $2,000.
Additional follow-up by Cape May Police lead to identifying a copper theft in their jurisdiction involving Williams.
Williams is currently being held at the Cape May County Correctional Center on multiple charges of theft with bail being set by Judge Birchemeier at $50,000.
