This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
BURLEIGH – Middle Township Police Department conducted an investigation resulting in a motel owner being charged with two counts of maintaining a nuisance, a disorderly persons offense.
According to a release, Dinesh Patel owns the Catalina Motel and the Wildwood Park Motel, both located in Burleigh.
A person will be charged in Middle Township with maintaining a nuisance when they knowingly conduct or maintain any premises, place, or resort where persons gather for purposes of engaging in unlawful conduct.
Middle Township Police Department self-generated or responded to a combined total of 211 calls for service at both motels between January 1, 2017 and June 6. A breakdown of the calls for service are listed below:
– 80 various calls for service
– 47 officer-generated calls for service
– 35 rescue / 911 calls for medical emergencies
– 13 narcotics investigations / narcotics search warrants
– 12 noise complaints
– 11 domestic violence calls for service
– 4 animal complaints
– 3 warrant arrests
– 2 death investigations
– 2 Megan’s Law registrations
– 1 missing person investigation
– 1 drug overdose investigation
There have been 26 people arrested at the motels during the aforementioned time period. Eleven of the 26 people arrested were during narcotics investigations generated by Middle Township Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit, in partnership with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. The below listed items were seized and collected as evidence during the narcotics investigations:
– 853 wax folds containing heroin
– $7,401
– 14 ounces of marijuana
– 3 ounces of cocaine and crack cocaine
– Raw heroin
– Suspected PCP, Phencyclidine
– Various drug paraphernalia
– Prescription pills not prescribed to the arrested subjects
“The amount of criminal activity at these motels is disturbing,” stated Chief Christopher Leusner. “The residents who reside in the area of these motels have a right to a safe neighborhood and the level of criminal activity is simply not acceptable.
“Mayor Michael Clark and Township Committee have instructed the Police Department to use all the tools at our disposal under the law to hold the owner of these two properties and any other property owner with significant levels of criminal activity accountable.”
