RIO GRANDE– On May 13, the Middle Township Police Department received a report of a robbery, which had just occurred at the Rio Grande Wawa at approximately 8:15 am. Patrol units responded within two minutes to the scene, but the suspect was reported as just leaving in a local taxi cab.
The police department’s Major Crimes Unit was notified and responded. As the investigation pursued, it was learned that the suspect, Thomas Michael Sexton, 23 years old, of Erma, had negotiated the sale of cocaine with the reported victim, Lawrence C. Walsh, 24 years old, residing at the Offshore Motel, located in Rio Grande.
Both arranged to meet at the Rio Grande Wawa for the exchange. Sexton met with Walsh within the Wawa and sold imitation drugs (sheetrock) to him. Walsh gave chase and notified Wawa personnel that he had just been robbed.
Sexton was charged with distribution of Imitation drugs (a crime of the 3rd degree) and Walsh was charged with wandering in a public place for the purpose of purchasing drugs (a disorderly persons offense).
Both were released on summonses. The investigation is still on- going and additional charges are pending.
Anyone within the Wawa that may have witnessed this incident please contact Detective Doug Osmundsen of the department’s Major Crimes Unit at 609-465-8700.
