Middle Police Warn Community About Scam Targeting The Elderly

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE– The Middle Township Police Department has recently received information that there have been subjects, suspect of fraud in the past, presenting themselves as “Home Repair” contractors, and knocking on doors of seniors, in our retirement community neighborhoods, suggesting “roofing repairs” are needed to their home.
Middle Township police strongly suggest that you be on the lookout for “scam” attempts, and alert the police department. In any event, do not provide your personal information, or give money in advance, for work promised to be completed in the future.
“It is always best to do your own research and hire licensed contractors to complete only the work you need to have completed. Get three estimates, in writing, before putting money out for a large project.” Sgt. Rich McHale said.
You can verify if a contractor has a license with the Department of Community Affairs. They also have a searchable website database. https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification
“Unfortunately, there are people committing various types of fraud by preying on seniors, as well as other residents that are unable to determine if the contractor is legitimate or not”, said McHale. We advise you at a minimum, to take the following steps:
1. Do not let strangers into your home.
2. Do not give money in advance, to persons/businesses you have never heard of.
3. Do not give out personal information (name, date of birth, social security etc.)
4. Do not give out account numbers, security codes for credit cards, pin numbers etc.
5. Do have someone with you when you make these decisions.
6. Do research a person/business before you hire them.
7. Do ask for references, insurance, and other business identifiers.
8. Do write down their license plate number.
9. Do call the police immediately, if you suspect fraudulent behavior.
10. Do call your local Chamber of Commerce, to check on a business.
11. Do report any complaints or suspicious activity to the Cape May County Division of Consumer Affairs (463-6475).
