Mentally Challenged Victim Assaulted During Robbery

NORTH CAPE MAY – The Lower Township Police Department received a 911 call on April 5th 2010 at 11:45 pm from employees at the WAWA store located on Bayshore Road in the North Cape may Section of Lower Township reporting an injured man.
Upon police arrival it was discovered that the injured individual was a mentally challenged man from Philadelphia PA who had just got off a New Jersey Transit Bus when he was approached by another individual who wanted his money. Upon refusing to give the money he was assaulted with closed fists about his face and head area. Injuries received included redness, swelling and minor bleeding. Lower Township Rescue responded and the victim refused treatment.
Detective Chris Lambert responded and upon speaking with the victim a person of interest was developed and further investigation lead to the apprehension and arrest of Allen L. Evans 42 years of age residing in the 3000 block of Bayshore Road in the North Cape May section of Lower Township.
Evans was transported to the Lower Township Police Department where he was processed and charged. He was charged with Robbery and Aggravated Assault. Judge James Birchrneier set bail at $25,000.00. Evans was then transferred to the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of bail.
Patrolman Brian McEwing, Patrolman Michael Szemcsak, Patrolman William Barcas and Detective Chris Lambert investigated the case. The officers then assisted the victim by giving their own money, so that the victim could purchase a bus ticket back to Philadelphia.
