COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor announced that on June 16, a Cape May County jury convicted Ernest P. Davis, 44, of Lower Township, of the attempted murder, first degree, and aggravated assault, second degree, of a 39-year-old female victim.

Davis was also convicted of the possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second degree, and hindering his own prosecution, third degree, following a one-week trial in Cape May County Superior Court, according to a release.

On Oct. 3, 2015, Davis shot the victim with a shotgun while aboard the fishing vessel “Storm,” which was docked in Lower Township at the time. As a result of the shooting, the victim’s left foot and partial calf were amputated. This investigation was conducted by members of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, and the Lower Township Police Department.

Judge John C. Porto presided over the matter and scheduled sentencing for Aug. 18. Prosecutor Taylor added due to the charges and Davis’ criminal history, he faces a maximum of life imprisonment with an 85 percent parole disqualifier.

Prosecutor Taylor commended all of the law enforcement agencies who investigated this violent crime and the assistant prosecutor who prosecuted this case resulting in the conviction of Davis.
