STONE HARBOR – A joint release from County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and Stone Harbor Police Chief Thomas Schutta Aug. 7 reported the Aug. 4 arrest of Thomas Marchetti Jr., 51, of Stone Harbor. He was charged with theft by deception, extortion, and burglary.
An investigation began in April by the County Prosecutor’s Economic Crimes Unit after a victim reported being scammed out of over $75,000 by Marchetti from January 2016 to June 2017.
The victim reported believing they had entered into a contract for gym equipment and memberships with a military organization.
Investigators learned there was no such contract, and that the victims had provided Marchetti with the funds.
It is alleged that an incident took place during which Marchetti used physical restraint to get more money from the victim.
Marchetti was charged Aug. 4, processed and lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center pending court proceedings.
Chief Paul Skill of the County Prosecutor’s Office stated this was an ongoing investigation. He urged citizens to report any information regarding alleged thefts involving Marchetti or any criminal activity to law enforcement anonymously through the county Sheriff’s Tip Line at cmcsheriff.net and click on anonymous tip, or through the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-465-2800 or 877-465-2801, or to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
