COURT HOUSE — A Villas man was arrested Feb. 25 charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. That child remains in critical condition in a Camden hospital.
Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and North Wildwood Police Chief Robert Matteucci announced the arrest of Charles R. Kane Jr., 35, of the 100 block of West New Jersey Avenue, Villas on one count each of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, both second degree crimes.
According to a release, Kane’s arrest was the result of a cooperative investigation involving the County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit along with North Wildwood Police Department’s Patrol and Detective divisions.
On Feb. 25, North Wildwood Police patrol officers responded to a report of an unresponsive juvenile. The child was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center, evaluated and transported to Cooper University Medical Center for treatment of a head injury.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Kane, an acquaintance of the child’s mother, allegedly caused the injury. The child remains hospitalized at Cooper University Hospital and is listed in critical condition. No additional information concerning the child’s condition will be released at this time.
Kane was processed on the charges at North Wildwood Police Department and was committed to the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Persons convicted of crimes of the second degree are subject to five to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
