Man Arrested for Alleged Assault in North Cape May

By Press Release

The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person(s) named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
NORTH CAPE MAY – On March 24 at about 7:49 p.m., officers from the Lower Township Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call of an alleged assault that had just occurred at a licensed establishment in North Cape May.
According to a release, upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim who stated that he had just been struck above his right eye with an unknown object, by an unknown white male in his 40s wearing a green shirt.
The victim had sustained a serious injury to his head and was bleeding from a laceration just above his right eye.  His eye was swollen shut and he complained of blurred vision.
An initial search of the area and inside the establishment for the actor was unsuccessful. The actor had apparently fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival.
The victim was treated on scene by Lower Township Rescue and later transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and medical care.
After further investigation, officers were able to ascertain the identity of the actor, David C. Hughes, 51, of North Cape May.
Officers of the Lower Township Police Department responded to the Hughes’ home where he was taken into custody.  Hughes was transported to Lower Township Police Department headquarters where he was processed and charged with aggravated assault.
Hughes was released on his own recognizance on a summons and is awaiting adjudication in court.
