VILLAS – Over the past few months, the Lower Township Police Department has dealt with numerous calls regarding scams.
A citizen called to make a report that a male subject with a foreign accent contacted her claiming they were the IRS June 28. After calling the number back it went to a blank voicemail. Later she was contacted by the same number and was told if she didn’t send them money she would be arrested. After investigation by the Lower Township police it was learned that this phone call was fraudulent and that the IRS was not looking to contact her.
A citizen called to make a report that a male subject contacted her and wanted money for damage to his vehicle July 20. The male stated there was a note on is car from her saying she accidentally hit his vehicle. After further investigation it was learned that the telephone number was fraudulent and that her vehicle was not involved in an accident.
A citizen called to make a report that she received an offer on Facebook for $50,000 if she sent $500 for a processing fee Aug. 14. After investigation into this offer it was learned that the offer was fraudulent and that if she had sent the money to the person requesting it she would not have received the $50,000.
A citizen called to make a report that a male subject by the name of “John Daines” from “International Sales Network” contacted her and told her she had won money Aug. 18. He then began to tell her that she needed to send $270 via Western Union to a “Deborah Shields.” After sending the money she contacted the police. After investigation it was learned that the phone call was fraudulent. The caller was able to get her money returned by contacting Western Union.
