ERMA — The Lower Township Police Department reported that they received a call at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Sept. 8 from a resident of the 600 block of Wayne Avenue in the North Cape May section of Lower Township, reporting a disorderly person banging on their door.
Upon police arrival the suspect fled back across the street and into his home. When police inquired further at his residence which is also located in the 600 block of Wayne Avenue, he became highly irate and combative. He then exited his home, charged at the police and began swinging his arms and fists at the two officers. At this point, Patrolman Ryan Hansberry who was off duty at the time assisted in apprehending the suspect and stopping the ongoing assault of the uniformed officers.
Patrolman Hansberry sustained several scrapes and bruising of his ankle and knee area during the incident, he was later treated for these injuries at Cape Urgent Care and released.
The suspect identified as James J. O’Neill, 39 years of age who resides in the 600 block of Wayne Avenue was arrested and charged on a warrant. He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault on the police officers and was transported to the Cape Regional Hospital for evaluation.
