Lower Cops Nab Two Teens Fleeing Dune Blaze

By Herald Staff

VILLAS — Two juvenile males, aged 13 and 14, were arrested on Tuesday, March 24 after Lower Township police spotted heavy smoke coming from sand dunes along Delaware Bay.
According to a release, at about 4:30 p.m., Patrol Officer William Barcas and Special Officer Michael Kennedy were conducting a motor vehicle stop at Ohio and Delaware avenues here when they saw the smoke.
At the time, the wind was pushing the brush fire toward occupied homes.
Barcas requested Villas Fire Department to respond. The officers then saw two teenage males fleeing from the area of the brush fire.
In the meantime, Villas firefighter and state Forest Fire Service personnel responded, and were able to extinguish the flames before any homes were threatened.
The youths were transported to Lower Township Police Department headquarters, and, after an investigation, each was charged with one count of arson on juvenile papers prior to being released to relatives.
The investigation was conducted by Barcas.
