VILLAS – Officers with Lower Township Police Department responded to a commercial business on Bayshore Road in Villas Jan. 31 at approximately 3:30 p.m. to investigate a suspicious person who was reported to be loitering inside of the establishment.
Upon arrival, officers were directed to the restroom where the subject was reported to have gone and remained for a significant amount of time.
The officers repeatedly knocked on the door and advised the subject he was not welcome at the business.
The subject exited the restroom and was acting peculiar as officers attempted to speak with him. After he attempted to push his way past the officers and flee on foot, he was quickly taken into custody.
A search of the subject, identified as Joseph T. Kelly, 26, who resides on the 100 block of Kentucky Avenue in Villas, revealed he was in possession of multiple bags of heroin, several hypodermic syringes and other drug paraphernalia.
Kelly was transported from the scene to the Lower Township Police Department where he was charged on a criminal warrant with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In default of $20,000 cash bail set by Judge Thomas Hillegass, Kelly was transported to the Cape May County Correctional Center.
