COURT HOUSE – The Dec. 9 death of a 45-year-old inmate at the county Correctional Center has been ruled “natural” according to County Prosecutor Robert Taylor.
Taylor stated the investigation surrounding the death of John McElroy showed shortly before the inmate became unresponsive he engaged in a brief altercation with another inmate.
Shortly after, McElroy complained of chest pain and became unresponsive. According to a press release issued the day after McElroy’s death, Taylor and County Sheriff Gary Schaeffer stated correctional officers were alerted by other inmates that McElroy was in medical distress and was unresponsive while in a common area of the correctional facility known as the “day room.”
“Correctional Officers responded and immediately began lifesaving efforts which included performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator prior to McElroy being transported to Cape Regional Medical Center,” stated the press release.
A Dec. 10 autopsy by Dr. Hashish certified the cause of death to be atherosclerotic hypertensive cardiovascular disease and the manner of death was ruled natural.
McElroy was incarcerated since Aug. 15 on a contempt charge out of Lower Township, according to the jail’s website.
