COURT HOUSE – A Cape May County grand jury handed up the following indictments Sept. 8:
Shawn Russell
An Avalon resident, Shawn Russell, 25, was indicted for third-degree burglary, theft of credit cards, theft of other property, and unlawful use of credit cards. During the evening of July 12, Russell allegedly entered a parked and unlocked white 2013 Hyundai automobile. The owner had parked the car for the night.
After receiving alerts from her bank of suspicious activity on her credit cards, the victim discovered the theft of her purse and cards from the car and notified police.
Russell was captured on camera using the credit cards at a local convenience store purchasing several hundred dollars of cigarettes. Russell was arrested and remanded to the Cape May County Correctional Center on $25,000 bail. Avalon Police also used the case to remind residents and guests to secure their property at all times.
Leander P. Jarrell
On the night of July 11, three individuals were caught on camera entering the property of an amusement pier in North Wildwood after hours. They allegedly took a computerized terminal cash register valued at $2,400. Damage was also done to a surveillance camera, which did not prevent their actions from being recorded.
Upon investigation two juveniles, one 13 and the other 16, were arrested, charged and released to the custody of their parents. The third individual arrested was Leander Jarrell, 23, of Clayton.
Jarrell was charged with theft in the third degree. The involvement of the two juveniles also led to a second degree charge of using a juvenile in a crime.
Michael J. Morrissey
On July 4, while most celebrated the country’s most important holiday, the grand jury alleges that Michael Morrissey entered a home on Evergreen Circle in Upper Township and took prescription pills belonging to the owner. While committing the crime, Morrissey also allegedly cruelly treated an animal living in the home.
Morrissey was indicted for third degree burglary and theft in the third degree along with animal cruelty, a fourth degree crime.
Joseph A. Robinson
Joseph Robinson was arrested Jan. 19 in Dennis Township and found to be in possession of a 9 mm handgun, for which he had no permit to carry, and a loaded shotgun. He was indicted this week on two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon with the handgun producing a second-degree charge.  The charge for the shotgun was third degree.
Justin A. Daily
Justin Daily, 20, of Rio Grande was indicted for burglary and theft, both in the third degree. Daily allegedly entered a bicycle and surfboard shop in Wildwood after hours May 13. Police allege that Daily took $700 worth of merchandise. Thefts in excess of $500 carry the more serious third-degree designation.
Arthur Chester, Joseph Spaventa
At 4:30 in the morning of May 23, Middle Township police responded to a call at a Rio Grande restaurant.  Investigation showed that someone had entered the premises through the ceiling, opened the safe with the combination, and stole a reported $5,300 in cash.
The grand jury indicted Arthur Clark, 30, of Rio Grande, and Joseph Spaventa for burglary, theft and conspiracy, all in the third degree.
Sean P. Hillegass, Milagros Arce-Tirado
On July 3, Sean Hillegass, 33, of Rio Grande, was arrested in Wildwood for possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), heroin, a Schedule I drug. He was indicted for possession of a CDS, third degree. In the same incident, Milagros Arce-Tirado was arrested for distribution of a CDS, heroin less than half an ounce. He was indicted for distribution of a CDS, third degree.
Hillegass had been arrested the day before, July 2, for shoplifting in Middle Township.  On Aug. 30, Hillegass was again arrested for shoplifting in Middle Township. The Herald reported a grand jury indictment for Hillegass in July for robbery, second degree. That charge stemmed from an incident on May 12. During that month of May, Hillegass was arrested three more times for shoplifting.  Hillegass is currently lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Center under $2,500 bail following the August arrest.
The individuals are only charged with the offenses and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
