COURT HOUSE – A Cape May County grand jury handed up 21 indictments May 21.
The abbreviation CDS below stands for controlled dangerous substance.
When a prior conviction makes it illegal for an individual to possess a weapon, that individual can be charged with a “certain person” felony for having a weapon.
The individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. 
 John G. Bersani
John Bersani, 29, of Erma, was indicted for third-degree possession of a CDS, clonazepam, along with fourth-degree hindering apprehension for providing false information to a law enforcement officer.
Nicole L. Becica
Nicole Becica, 40, of Ocean View, faces two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and one first-degree count for employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime. The indictment states that Becica used a 14-year-old to “commit a criminal offense, specifically provide drugs” to the second child who was listed as 5 years old. No further details were provided.
Jorge A. Aviles
Jorge Aviles, 27, of Wildwood was indicted on one count of second-degree robbery for causing bodily injury to a male victim in the course of a theft.
Gabriel Acevedo-Curbelo
Gabriel Acevedo-Curbelo, 30, of Rio Grande faces a five-count indictment for possession of heroin, third degree, possession with intent to distribute, third degree, possession with intent within 500 feet of public property, Holly Beach Park, second degree, possession of a weapon, a knife, during a CDS crime, second degree, and fourth-degree certain person. The certain person charge for possession of a weapon is related to Acevedo-Curbelo’s 2017 conviction for possession of a CDS.
Brittany A. Dermott, Heriberto Alteriz-Soto and Marissa A. Shelton
Brittany A. Dermott, 27, Heriberto Alteriz-Soto, 34, and Marissa A. Shelton, 24, were arrested following a motor vehicle stop by Wildwood Police on Rio Grande Avenue. Both Dermott and Alteriz-Soto face counts for possession of a CDS, heroin, possession with intent to distribute, conspiracy, possession with intent within 100 feet of a school and distribution of a CDS, each count in the third degree. They also face a second-degree count for possession with intent within 500 feet of public property. Shelton was indicted on one count of attempted possession of a CDS, third degree.
Jarrid Davis
Jarrid Davis, 40, of Woodbine, was indicted for burglary and robbery, each in the second degree. Davis is lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
Deanna L. Bond
Deanna Bond, 34, of New Castle, Del., was indicted on one count of possession of a CDS, hydromorphone, an opioid pain reliever.
Antoinette E. Cheeks and Sarah R. Dewitt
Antoinette Cheeks, 38, of Whitesboro, and Sarah Dewitt were indicted for possession of a CDS, heroin, possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy. All three counts were in the third degree.
Joseph M. Jamison
Joseph Jamison, of Dennis Township, was indicted for third-degree possession of a CDS, oxycodone.
Nelson Irizarry-Garcia
Nelson Irizarry-Garcia faces a four-count indictment that states he attempted burglary of a residence on East Garfield Avenue while possessing a knife. He is named in counts for second-degree attempted burglary, third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and two fourth-degree counts for unlawful possession of a weapon and certain person. Irizarry-Garcia was convicted of burglary in Cape May County in 2007.
Edward Hetzel
Edward Hetzel, 25, of Wildwood Crest was indicted for third-degree burglary of a structure on the grounds of the Middle Township Department of Public Works.
David J. Fowler
David Fowler, of Upper Township, faces two counts for possession of a CDS, cocaine, and possession with intent to distribute. Each count was in the third degree.
James T. Hayes
James Hayes, 31, of Rio Grande, was indicted on three counts of possession of a CDS, one count of third-degree possession with intent and two second-degree counts for possession with intent to distribute and possession with intent within 500 feet of public property, the Cape May County Park. The drugs involved in the three counts of possession were cocaine, alprazolam, and oxycodone.
Virginia McDermott
Virginia McDermott, of Rio Grande, was indicted for making terroristic threats and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, each third degree, along with fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. The indictment says she threatened a victim with assault while possessing a knife.
David E. Rossi
David Rossi, 25, of Erma, was indicted for third-degree possession of a CDS, methamphetamine, along with fourth-degree shoplifting at a Rio Grande store.
Jason M. Viola
Jason Viola, of Wildwood, faces two second-degree counts for possession of a CDS, etizolam, a drug not authorized for use in the nation even for medical purposes, along with possession within 500 feet of public property. Possession with intent within 1,000 feet of a school earned Viola a third count in the third degree.
Stephanie Smith
An incident in North Wildwood April 7 resulted in Stephanie Smith facing an indictment for second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, 8 years old. The indictment provides no other details.
Kenneth Wade
Kenneth Wade, of Wildwood, was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault on a female victim. One count was in the second degree and the other in the third degree. The indictment states that the assault met the definition of domestic violence. Wade was also charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, third degree and unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth degree. The weapon listed in the indictment was a table leg. A 2018 conviction for aggravated assault also led to Wade facing a certain person count in the fourth degree.
Donald Walsh
Donald Walsh, 53, of Cape May, was indicted on one count of fourth-degree aggravated assault. Lower Township Police reports show the incident Jan. 16 as involving driving while intoxicated (DWI) and assault by auto.
Vindra S. Williams and Hedith A. Hicks
Vindra Williams and Hedith Hicks were jointly indicted for intent to sell drug paraphernalia, fourth degree. Williams faces an additional count for third-degree possession of a CDS, heroin.
Seth Wood
Seth Wood, 19, of Ocean City, faces two second-degree counts for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent within 500 feet of public property. The indictment also contains two third-degree counts for possession with intent to distribute hashish along with possession with intent within 1,000 feet of a school. Two counts of third-degree possession of marijuana and hashish are also included. Police records say that Wood had over 20 pounds of marijuana in his possession.
