RIO GRANDE — On Sept. 13 at 12:39 a.m., Middle Township police received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a man had been assaulted outside of the Rio Grande Wawa convenience store at the corner of Routes 9 and 47.
At the scene, Police found Joseph Unkle, 28, of Villas, lying on the ground unconscious. He was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for his injuries by Rio Grande Rescue.
According to police, the accused, Patrick F. Dougherty Jr., 22, of Erma, had fled the scene on foot. The County Sheriff’s K-9 unit responded and attempted to track the offender, but had negative results.
An investigation led to Dougherty’s arrest. He was charged with aggravated assault and placed in county jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.
The incident remains under investigation by Patrolman James Loftus, Detective First Class Allan McClure and Detective Sgt. Chris Murphy.
