DWI Charge Follows Hit, Run Crash

NORTH CAPE MAY – Lower Township Police Department received a report Sept. 16 at approximately 9:10 p.m. of a hit and run motor vehicle crash on Bayshore Road near Rosehill Parkway in North Cape May, with no reported injuries. The fleeing vehicle was described as a white Kia Rio with heavy damage to the front end.  
During the ensuing investigation of the crash, the vehicle was located parked in a parking lot in the 3700 block Bayshore Road in North Cape May. The sole occupant of the vehicle, Michael E. Benson, 59, who resides in Shawcrest, was found uninjured.
Benson was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was issued numerous motor vehicle summonses including refusal to submit breath samples. He was also charged on a criminal complaint summons with possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.
At the conclusion of processing, Benson was released to the custody of a responsible adult. 
This investigation was conducted by Patrolwoman Jennifer Anzelone, Patrolman Jason Felsing and Patrolman Robert Fessler.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
